Enrico Letta

Author of the Letta Report, former Italian Prime Minister

Enrico Letta served as Prime Minister of Italy from 2013 to 2014 and as leader of the Democratic Party of Italy from 2021 to 2023. He is currently President of the Jacques Delors Institute and Dean of the IE School of Politics, Economics and Global Affairs in Madrid.

Born in Pisa in 1966, Letta holds a doctorate in European Community Law. His political career began in the youth movement of Democrazia Cristiana. From 1998 onward, he held various ministerial positions, including Minister for European Affairs and Minister of Industry. From 2004 to 2009, he was a Member of the European Parliament. In 2013, he was appointed Prime Minister of Italy, leading a grand coalition until 2014. His decision to arrive at the presidential palace in a Fiat upon taking office was seen as a symbolic act against political privileges.

After his resignation, Letta took on a leading role at Sciences Po Paris in 2014. In 2021, he returned to politics as leader of the Partito Democratico and served as a member of the Italian Parliament until 2023. In 2023, European institutions tasked him with drafting a report on the future of the Single Market. Titled Much more than a market, the report was published in April 2024.

For his contributions, Letta has received numerous honors, including Spain’s Gran Cruz for civil merit and the French Legion of Honor.
