This panel will discuss the lessons from the crisis for the policy framework: what has worked, what still needs to be done and what has led to unintended consequences? It will address issues such as pro-cyclicality, capital and liquidity buffers, market fragmentation and ring fencing, how return to sustainable RoE ratios, etc.
The panel will also look at the perspectives of the European banking sector and the regulatory framework in the new context, as well as it will reflect on the role of the financial sector in the recovery, by discussing how banks are part of the path to recovery and how third country banks can contribute further in that direction.

The recovery will accelerate the transition towards a green and digital economy which lies at the heart of the European Green Deal and the Digital Single Market. The European Commission will soon present a Renewed Sustainable Finance Strategy and it has published a Digital Finance Strategy last year, thus illustrating the importance that the financial sector will play in the green and digital transitions.
Key integration projects like the CMU and Banking Union are given renewed impetus as they become even more important in the post-pandemic economic recovery. They are complementary to the objectives of the Green Deal and the Digital Single Market. The CMU sets out crucial framework conditions for a successful transition towards a green and digital economy.
This panel will discuss recent progress and future goals in green and digital finance and the actions needed to foster Europe’s competitiveness as well as to limit the risk of fragmentation. Further, we will reflect on the importance of the relationship between the EU and third countries.
